Important properties
A good upholstery fabric should retain its original colour, shape and structure for as long as possible. For example, it needs good lightfastness values so that the colour does not fade even after years of exposure to the sun. It should also have good abrasion and tear resistance, as most pieces of furniture are frequently used everyday companions. This durability is usually measured and specified according to the Martindale test (abrasion cycles).
A dirt-resistant, easy-to-clean surface should also be standard.
For upholstery fabrics that are to be used outdoors in the garden or on the patio, for example, values such as water-repellent impregnation and a waterproof coating or membrane are also important. The lightfastness of the fabric is also particularly important here.
Particularly scratch-resistant upholstery fabrics are suitable for households with pets, as the claws of four-legged friends cannot get caught in them and pull threads out of the fabric. In addition, the smooth surface means that they offer less surface area for animal hair to stick to and are therefore easier to clean.

Care instructions
As various materials and compositions are grouped together under the term upholstery fabrics, special attention should be paid to the care instructions for each product.
In general, however, the furniture fabrics should be wiped with a damp cloth, vacuumed with a smooth upholstery nozzle (without bristles) or brushed with a soft brush. This is an uncomplicated and effective way of removing everyday dirt from the furniture.
In the case of heavy soiling, the upholstery fabrics can usually also be washed at low spin speeds, provided they can still be separated from the furniture frame intact after processing. If it is not possible to remove the fabric, you can also use a conventional upholstery cleaner, which should be tested in advance on an inconspicuous area of the upholstery fabric before using it on large areas.
