UV-protection fabrics by the metre
To create a retreat from the sun in summer, choosing the right fabric is crucial! This way, we can all protect ourselves effectively from harmful sunburn and heat in everyday life. In this category, you’ll find fabrics with a UV protection of UPF 50+.
Not sure which fabric suits your sun protection sewing project best? Feel free to use our fabric consultation — we're happy to help!
How do fabrics protect against the sun?
The UV protection factor of a fabric depends largely on the density of the weave. The denser the fabric, the less harmful UV radiation can pass through.
Color also plays a role: dark colors generally absorb more radiation than light ones. However, dark fabrics tend to heat up faster and may lose their shape sooner.
How do I know how well a fabric protects against the sun?
Look for labels indicating the UPF rating, which is determined in a lab and shows how much radiation is blocked. The best value is UPF 50+, meaning the fabric lets through only 1/50 of radiation, blocking at least 98%.
In general, any textile offers some UV protection. However, we can only provide exact values for lab-tested fabrics — you’ll find these details in the product descriptions.
How do I care for sun protection fabrics?
To keep your sun protection fabrics in great condition for as long as possible, here are some tips:
- Use fabrics with a UV protection factor of UPF 50+
- Choose fabrics with high color and light fastness
- Alternatively: Use textile impregnations with UV blockers (must be reapplied regularly)
- When not in use, store the fabric indoors, dry and in the dark. Do not fold — roll instead to avoid damage and permanent creases
